FedEx may be sniffing around for a new distribution center and that spot may be in Baltimore County. To be exact, they may be interested in the former Sparrows Point Steel Mill (Bethlehem Steel).
Though no one wants to say that it is a done deal, because it isn’t, things are looking good as Baltimore County has documents showing that FedEx has applied to build a warehouse on a 43.45 acre property at 2001 Wharf Road in Sparrows Point, which is one of the addresses for the old steel mill currently owned by Sparrows Point Terminal, LLC.
The Baltimore County Development Review Committee will meet today to consider a “Sparrows Point Distribution Hub” and this is a very early step in the development process. They will review preliminary plans to decide if a project can apply for permits right away or if the project must go through a more detailed screening.
According to the Baltimore Sun, Councilman Todd Crandell of District 7 stated, “I think that we should be excited that companies like Fed Ex are looking to come to the area, but I’m not aware of any deal that’s been signed.” and a spokesman for FedEx declined to comment.
An economic development spokeswomen for the county, Fronda Cohen, stated “Sparrows Point would be a good fit for a shipping company, given its industrial zoning and easy access to highways, including the Baltimore Beltway.”

Sparrows Point terminal is backed, financially, by Redwood Capital Investments which is a local investment firm linked to entrepreneur Jim Davis, co-founder of Aerotek along with his cousin and owner of The Baltimore Ravens, Steve Bisciotti. Sparrows Point Terminal has agreed to spend $48 million on environmental cleanup of the area as well as give $3 million to the U.S. Environmental Protection Agency to investigate possible contamination of waters surrounding the property.
FedEx is building a number of distribution centers in other cities in Virginia, California, Florida, Delaware, and others and they generally range in size from about 200,000 square feet to 300,000 square feet and employ 100 to 1,000 workers.
If FedEx, Sparrows Point Terminal, LLC, and Baltimore County can come to some sort of agreement, this would be a very nice boost for “real” jobs in the area – jobs that are full-time with benefits and something substantial with which one can raise a family.
